In four reports, researchers examined Indeed.com data to answer that question. The skills appeared most frequently in job postings. And the skills showed the most growth over the past year and five years. Additionally, they identified some key trends and which skills are most important for some of the most in-demand job titles.

The demand for experience with big data tools, machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence (AI) is also increasing. In addition, today’s enterprises are moving towards digital transformation, which means front-end Web development tools, including JavaScript frameworks like Backbone.js, Angular.js, React.js, and Vue.js, are very valuable.

Ten IT skills that were in demand in 2021

According to Indeed.com, in 2021, “software engineer” was the most popular job title in tech, accounting for 6.8% of all tech job postings. The report states the next two jobs on the list, senior software engineer and software architect, are closely related to the No. 1 position, accounting for 13.6% of technology jobs in 2014. Aside from systems engineers, developers, systems administrators, full-stack developers, technical support specialists, front-end developers, and product managers are also in demand.

When we analyze the specific skills needed for today’s tech jobs, we see an interesting trend. The number of job postings related to technology trends is increasing rapidly, but they still account for a relatively small portion of the overall job market. Python ML library, for instance, grew by 138% between 2020 and 2021, but only accounts for 0.4% of all job postings.

In contrast, some of the programming languages at the top of the list ten years ago still account for over 20% of the tech job listings.

Even if you’re a loner at work, big data is a big job that requires a team, including roles such as data warehouse engineer, data platform engineer, data infrastructure engineer, analytics engineer, data architect, and DevOps engineer. You get the idea – there are a lot of people on the team. Although they work deep within the systems stack, the data team is often overlooked. Working behind the scenes must be something you take pride in.

Developing the right skill sets

The ability to program is a core requirement for developing relevant skill sets, according to experts. Having the right education is important, but nothing beats real-world experience when it comes to coding.

When you’re in such a technical position, you need to love data – otherwise, it might be a bit of a drag to spend a lot of time searching for patterns and creating difficult and complex systems.
